Abstract:
Insights obtained from the Ising model, defined by simple “up” or “down” spins interacting on a lattice, played a central role in the development of the theory of phase transitions and critical phenomena. The Ising model has found applications in many areas of physics and beyond, reaching as far afield as sociology and ecology. Recent developments featuring the Ising model include (i) the experimental investigation of thermal ordering in an artificial analogue of the asymmetric two-dimensional Ising model composed of a rectangular array of nano-fabricated magnetostatically interacting islands, and (ii) a proof that the two-dimensional Ising model with fields is universal and can thus be used as a universal simulator of more complicated systems. In this talk I will discuss these developments and provide some background on the solution of the Ising model. I will also discuss a generalization of the Ising model to an arbitrary number of states which has a remarkable solution involving parafermions.
